Working Remotely: The Disruptive Move Points to Business-As-Unusual

Since the pandemic, many companies have had to adopt remote work options for their employees. While this has been a positive change for many workers, there are concerns that the decline of remote work options in the future could lead to a decrease in job opportunities, labor pushback, and more.

Will the decline of remote work options lead to an uptick in solopreneurs and entrepreneurs?

As companies begin implementing a return-to-the-office policy, remote work options could dry up for the majority of workers who kept the business afloat in lean times. This is slowly leading to some interesting new developments, such as smaller companies trying to cut costs by getting rid of the "office-only" mandate. Service industry providers like restaurants are relocating their businesses to be closer to residential areas where home-bound workers remain strong.

About 13% of workers have reserved the right to choose, while others remain undecided. The hybrid option is a new compromise to provide workers with autonomy, while smaller companies strive to save money by keeping workspace minimal, and other employers want to have an office-only workforce. The hybrid worker, as it seems, comes into the office on scheduled days only. It is speculated that this hybrid resolution is temporary to give workers some time to readjust to returning to the office.

With more travel and outdoor events reopening throughout the world, perhaps summer isn't the best time to decide, but certainly, the freedom to get out again is an alluring reason to remain remote.

Where might this leave freelancers, solopreneurs, and entrepreneurs?

Will demands by employers in either direction increase an interest in entrepreneurship as individuals seek to create their own job opportunities? With fewer remote work options available in specific fields or industries, individuals may be open to creating their own businesses to make a living.

Additionally, remote working individuals have been able to work from home and have had more control over their work schedules, be more available for family, and have more time to develop outside interests, creating a shift in work-life balancing expectations.

Finally, workers who went remote have not only experienced newfound freedoms, more control over their day, and less stress, but potentially a sense of power/empowerment, as well. All of this may be too beneficial to let go for any price as individuals seek to weatherproof their incomes in the event of future downturns.

As we move forward, it will be important to support and encourage entrepreneurship in order to create a more resilient and innovative economy, whatever part you choose to play.
